Discussion :

2. Explain the significance of the last sentence. What is Wong’s attitude as an adult toward Chinese school? Why do you think her changed?

3. Wong and her brother resented being forced to attend Chinese school.  Do you think their mother was right in making them go? Why or Why not?

"At last, I was one of you; I wasn’t one of them. SADLY I still am." Ms. Wong though that she is one part of American, but not a part of Chinese.

Writer said her mother walked them forcibly to seven long, hilly block from the home to school.
Their tears could not change their mother's determine.  Every days, at same time, they went to Chinese language school instead of played with friends, classmates.  While their friends sneak out to the empty lot to hunt ghosts and animal bones or had a lot fun outside, they were sitting in the class to face a child-killer, who was their Chinese teacher.  In contrast to American style, she thought Chinese is old, raunchy and unbeautiful.  And the way of her grandmother's speaking was embarrassing to her.  Her bother often was very hard on his mother.  If their mother made some mistakes of English speaking, his brother would constantly correct her.

In this article, Ms. Wong talks about her bad memories of  study Chinese experience.  However, after many years later, she grew up and realized that she missed the chance to have a mixed culture and regret that she did not treasure her heritage.

I agree with her mother to have their children learn the culture and language from their heritage.  Everyone cannot cut their relationship that originates from blood.  In my opinion, each person must be grateful and respect themselves culture and tradition. Ms. Wong had a great chance to become mixed culture person, but she closed the door.   One day, she realized that her own culture has a long history and valuable meanings.  Nowadays, this is a world of global village.   Learning more languages means more advantages in many sides.   If I were their mother I would like to encourage them to learn the beauty of Chinese culture.  There are many ways to increase kids' interesting of language study.  Children would not reject the new entertaining things; they may grow up happily with cultural diversification.
